Wines from around the U.S. earn top honors at INDY International

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Trinchero Family Estates of California was named Winery of the Year and 2018 Eagle Point White by Dubuque Heritage Winery of Iowa won Wine of the Year at the 2019 INDY International Wine Competition.

Richard Batchelor of Maryhill Winery in Washington was named Winemaker of the Year, an honor he also claimed in last year's competition. Satek Winery of Indiana won the Governor's Cup, which is awarded to Indiana's top winery.

Nearly 1,800 wines were entered in the 28th annual competition, which took place in late-May on the Purdue University campus. This year's competition featured 361 winemakers from 13 countries and 36 U.S. states.

Wines, ciders and meads were evaluated by 46 judges who are winemakers and chefs, marketing executives and wholesalers, writers and journalists, and enologists and winegrowers.

"The competition is a great way to network with others from around the United States and allows me to explore different varieties from around the world," said judge Anne Zwink, of Soldier Creek Winery in Fort Dodge, Iowa. "There is nothing like the INDY."

Other top winners in this year's competition were:

* Red Wine of the Year - 2016 Black Tie Syrah, Michael Gill Cellars, California.

* White Wine of the Year - 2017 Ballet, Dancing Dragonfly Winery, Wisconsin.

* Sparkling Wine of the Year - Barefoot Bubbly Pink Moscato Champagne, California.

* Rosé Wine of the Year - 2018 Vista Rose', Brown County Winery, Indiana.

* Fruit Wine of the Year - Sugar Lips Peach, Talon Winery & Vineyard, Kentucky.

* Dessert Wine of the Year - 2017 Creekbend Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, Oliver Winery, Indiana.

* Package Design of the Year - 2017 Moscatel, Morais Vineyards & Winery, Virginia.

* Wine Label of the Year - The Riveter, Daniel's Vineyard, Indiana.

The INDY International Wine Competition has been organized by the Purdue Wine Grape Team since 1992. It is the largest independently organized wine competition in the country, drawing both commercial and amateur entries. In the 2019 competition, 75 wines were named Best in Class and 1,620 medals were awarded.
